THE STUDY HABITS OF MARINE ENGINEERING NIS CADETS AT JOHN B. LACSON COLLEGES FOUNDATION – BACOLOD IN RELATION TO THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Dr. Araceli C. Doromal

The trend of modern education is designated toward goal attainment, a goal confined in a school which requires student's ability to attain higher insights, skills in critical analysis, and excellence in academic performance.

Steinberger & Wagner distinguishes more simply among three intelligences; the academic-problem solving; the practical intelligence; and creative intelligence; all these three have peculiar influence to performance.

Success in study does not depend on ability and hard work but also on effective methods of study. Individualized method of studying is adopted by every individual students, thus, a good study habit will mean the ability to learn and make use of what one is reading or studying. Study skills when properly embedded will help students understand their own potentials for intellectual growth and self-direction. It is for this reason that the strategies of proper study habits among students should be given emphasis.

This study therefore, has its primary attempt to find out how the academic performance of the students under study is influenced by their study habits, thus providing the school relevant information which can be of great assistance to the academic department of the college and further strengthen the primary purpose of maritime education such as: to train to be competent in handling the vessel safely; controlling the shipboard system; management of shipping companies and other related processes and systems; and protection of the environment.

The descriptive research design was employed in this study. According to Best, descriptive research is concerned with conditions or relationships that exist; practices that prevail, beliefs, points of view or attitudes that are held; practices that are going on; effects that are being felt or trends that are developing. It involves the measurement classification and evaluation of gathered data. This method was used in this study to ascertain the conditions relative to study habits and academic performances of the 4 th year Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (BSMarE) – Norwegian International Shipping (NIS) cadets.

The following conclusions are hereby formulated based on the findings of the study. The 4 th year BSMarE-NIS cadets had developed a highly desirable study environment. The 4 th year BSMarE-NIS cadets had a moderately desirable study habit in reading and note-taking technique.

The 4 th year BSMarE-NIS cadets had a moderately desirable study habit in time management. The 4 th year BSMarE-NIS cadets had a highly desirable study habit by concentrating on the lesson being studied. The study habits of the 4 th year BSMarE-NIS cadets as indicated by four aspects taken as a whole, were highly desirable. The level of academic performance of the 4 th year BSMarE-NIS cadets was highly satisfactory. Among the four aspects of study habits, it was found out that aspect B, Reading and Note taking Technique is related to academic performance. There is a low correlation between the study habits and the academic performance of the 4 th year BSMarE-NIS cadets.
